Important
Always test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area of the wallcovering first to ensure the surface is not damaged.
Why does grasscloth wallpaper have visible seams between panels?
Visible panel seams are a natural characteristic of real grasscloth wallpaper, not a defect. Because each strip is woven from individual sisal fibers that absorb dye differently, no two panels are identical. The subtle variation at each seam is part of the handcrafted character that makes grasscloth distinctive. Professional installers use a reverse-hanging technique to minimize seam visibility, but some paneling should always be expected and is considered a hallmark of authentic grasscloth.
Can I use this grasscloth wallpaper in a bathroom or kitchen?
We do not recommend grasscloth wallpaper in full bathrooms or kitchens. Natural sisal fibers absorb moisture, which can cause watermarking, dye bleeding, and mildew over time. Powder rooms and half baths without direct shower exposure are fine with proper ventilation. For high-moisture spaces, consider our residential paper wallpapers or commercial Type II vinyl wallcoverings, which are fully scrubbable and moisture-resistant.
How do I care for sisal grasscloth wallpaper?
Dust your grasscloth regularly using a soft brush attachment on your vacuum at low suction, or a clean dry cloth. Never use water, liquid cleaners, or steam on natural sisal fibers. If a spill occurs, blot immediately with a clean, dry white cloth — do not rub. For stubborn marks, consult a professional wallcovering cleaner who uses dry extraction methods. Always test any cleaning approach in an inconspicuous area first.
Will this grasscloth wallpaper fade in direct sunlight?
Natural fiber wallcoverings, including sisal grasscloth, can fade when exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. Darker colors are more susceptible than lighter tones. For rooms with strong sun exposure, we recommend using window treatments to filter UV light — sheer curtains, solar shades, or UV-filtering window film will significantly extend the color life of your grasscloth. Rooms with indirect or diffused natural light are ideal.
How is grasscloth wallpaper installed?
Grasscloth requires professional installation. The installer applies a clear, non-staining adhesive directly to the wall — never to the paper backing, as moisture will permanently stain the sisal fibers. Panels are butt-joined and typically reverse-hung to balance natural color variation between strips. Because grasscloth rolls are wider than standard wallpaper and the natural fibers are less forgiving of repositioning, experienced installation is essential.
How much extra grasscloth wallpaper should I order?
We recommend ordering 15 to 20 percent more grasscloth wallpaper than your calculated square footage. Natural fiber wallcoverings produce more cutting waste than standard wallpaper due to the reverse-hanging technique and the need to match fiber grain between panels. Grasscloth is also dye-lot specific — colors can vary between production runs, so ordering enough from a single lot avoids mismatched panels if you need more later.
Is this grasscloth wallpaper eco-friendly?
Yes. Our grasscloth wallpaper is made from natural sisal fibers — a rapidly renewable plant resource — woven onto a paper backing. Sisal is biodegradable, sustainably harvested, and requires no irrigation or pesticides to grow.
